Conference minutes, 1768 October 18.

Copy of the minutes of a conference at Fort Stanwix with the Tuscarora Indians regarding a renewed complaint filed by the chief. In 1766, while traveling through Pennsylvania, six horses were stolen from the Indians at a value of £50. Sir William Johnson told the chief at the time to write to the governor of Pennsylvania for a settlement. The governor consented and a settlement was to be paid in response to the renewed complaint. Signed by Guy Johnson, deputy agent and secretary. Witnessed by Sir William Johnson, Richard Peters and James Tilghmen, commissioners of the province of Pennsylvania, and by Frederick Smyth, Chief Justice of New Jersey.

Frederick Smyth (1819-1899), thirty-second governor of New Hampshire, was born in Candia, NH. In 1839, he moved to Manchester, NH where he was employed for ten years as clerk and proprietor of a store. Smyth became Manchester city clerk in 1849 and later served four terms as Manchester's mayor. He was elected governor in 1865 and reelected in 1866.
